Tummy Tuck

The abdominal region is a common target area for individuals considering body contouring treatments. Oftentimes, patients struggle with stubborn fat and excess skin that has collected in the abdomen and has not responded to traditional diet and exercise regimens. Additionally, weakening or stretching of the abdominal wall muscle layer that can occur with pregnancy, weight gain, and/or aging contributes to a less ideal contour. Tummy tuck surgery is a popular cosmetic surgery option to address those concerns and produce firmer skin, tighter and flatter abdominal wall muscles, and improved abdominal contour.

At Brighter Day Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery, board-certified plastic surgeon Kevin Day, MD recognizes how aesthetic concerns in the abdominal area can negatively affect a patient’s confidence. He is extensively trained and experienced with tummy tuck procedures and has helped many patients achieve their goals with customized treatment plans designed to create exceptional, natural-looking results.

What Is Tummy Tuck Surgery?

A tummy tuck, also referred to as abdominoplasty, is designed to recontour the midsection for a smoother, firmer, and more youthful look. The procedure involves removing excess skin and fatty tissue from the abdominal wall while pulling the remaining skin taut for a flatter appearance. Abdominoplasty also typically includes tightening and repairing the abdominal muscles. Men and women alike pursue this procedure to correct signs of loose, excess skin that even a healthy and active lifestyle cannot improve. Tummy tuck surgery can address many of the aesthetic effects on the abdomen that are produced by pregnancy and childbirth, as well as the after-effects of significant weight loss. With that in mind, genetics, environmental factors, and even the natural aging process can cause excess, inelastic skin and muscle laxity in the abdomen that may not be correctable through diet and exercise alone.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Day can evaluate your concerns and help you determine whether you are an ideal candidate for tummy tuck surgery.

What Does the Tummy Tuck Procedure Involve?

Abdominoplasty is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, so patients can typically go home the same day. It is also important to note that general anesthesia will be required for this treatment. To begin the tummy tuck procedure, Dr. Day will carefully place an incision above the pubic region, going from one hip to the other. The residual scar from this incision can often be easily concealed under clothing and bathing suits, and the scar should also fade to some extent over time. In many cases, an additional incision may be necessary in the navel area in order to reposition the belly button. Stretched abdominal muscles will then be repaired and tightened, and excess skin will be removed. The remaining skin is then pulled taut and often slightly trimmed before the incision is closed.

Additionally, C-section scars and stretch marks can typically be removed during a tummy tuck as long as they are in the lower abdominal area where skin excision is being performed. Liposuction may also be recommended as part of the tummy tuck procedure if it is ultimately necessary for the achievement of individual treatment goals.

What Can I Expect in My Tummy Tuck Recovery?

Recovery from abdominoplasty can vary from patient to patient as each individual’s healing process is unique to them. Many patients experience swelling and tightness in the treatment area, though these side effects often subside in the days following the procedure. Any discomfort felt during recovery can typically be well-managed with pain medication. After a couple of weeks of resting, most patients can return to their normal daily routines; however, strenuous activities and workouts should be avoided for roughly six weeks. Dr. Day will provide detailed post-operative instructions to encourage a safe and effective healing process.

How Much Does a Tummy Tuck Cost?

The total cost of abdominoplasty often differs from patient to patient since these treatments are customized to each individual’s unique needs. Pricing may range from $9,200 to $12,500. Some of the factors that can contribute to the overall cost include:
