Practice Philosophy

Dr. Day’s personal philosophy toward plastic surgery expands on the concept of the “beautiful normal.” The idea of the “beautiful normal” describes the cosmetic restoration of multiple adjacent areas of the body to create a beautiful, natural, and harmonious appearance of the entire body or face. Dr. Day takes that approach a step further by addressing the patient as a whole and not simply the physical sum of their parts.

At Brighter Day Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery, we will do everything we can to optimize your chances for a safe and youthful result to achieve the “beautiful normal” you. Our practice philosophy can be described through four pillars to help patients achieve a natural, more youthful appearance.

Pillar 1: Anatomy

At its core, surgery is a specialty of anatomy. In patients with youthful and healthy tissues, achieving the “beautiful normal” can often be accomplished through cosmetic surgery, minimally invasive injectable treatments, or non-invasive aesthetic treatments alone. But in instances of tissue damage from surgery or traumatic injuries, the normal anatomic form can be disrupted. In these instances, reconstructive surgery may be required first to restore a more natural and normal anatomic appearance. Physicians like Dr. Day who perform reconstructive surgery often have an advantage over those who strictly perform cosmetic surgery because when a surgeon understands the anatomy well enough to reconstruct it from scratch, the augmentation and rejuvenation of normal healthy tissues becomes much easier.

Pillar 2: Physiology

A good surgeon considers the overall health and well-being of their patients. While surgery is highly technical, surgeons are not just technicians performing the same surgeries on any patient who requests them. A patient’s physiology and baseline health, including current medications, health issues, and prior surgical history factor into whether or not a patient will have an uneventful recovery and achieve the “beautiful normal” result. Your safety is our first concern and assistance from your primary care doctor or other specialists may be required before elective cosmetic surgery. In the event there are conditions that may make surgery less safe, we will work with you to correct these issues prior to scheduling surgery.

Pillar 3: Mentality

To achieve the “beautiful normal,” when a patient looks and feels their best, both doctor and patient need to approach surgery with the proper mindset. Knowing your goals and expectations, reasons for wanting to pursue surgery, social habits, and ability to properly follow postoperative care instructions will help Dr. Day achieve the best possible results. If a patient is not in the best emotional state to proceed with surgery, it is much safer to address those issues and concerns before proceeding with elective surgery. The “beautiful normal” is so much more than the appearance of physical youth or beauty. To achieve this, you must feel it as well as look it. That’s why at Brighter Day Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery, we focus on the whole patient, making an effort to establish rapport, understand a patient’s concerns, and customize the surgical plan to meet their specific goals. This ensures to the best of our ability results that make you look good and also feel good.

Pillar 4: Rejuvenation and Beauty

Once a patient’s anatomy, baseline health, and mindset have been optimized to proceed with surgery, we can then focus on the aesthetic. The most subjective of the pillars is rejuvenation and beauty. This is also where the art and science of plastic surgery intersect. While societal norms can often shape our concept of what is beautiful, beauty itself remains subjective. That’s why Dr. Day always strives to understand what his patient deems beautiful; otherwise, he is projecting his own ideal of beauty onto the patient rather than working to achieve what the patient truly wants. We will always listen carefully and work to understand a patient’s ideal of beauty and what they hope to accomplish through surgery. Each surgical plan is individualized to address the patient’s specific areas of concern and to create results they find beautiful. It is through this process that the beautiful normal is achieved consistently and reliably.

The Importance of Board Certification

Did you know that many cosmetic surgeries and aesthetic treatments are performed by doctors who are not properly trained? Unfortunately, many doctors, nurses, and aestheticians attempt to provide these procedures to enrich themselves even though they lack the extensive training required to perform them properly. Plastic surgeons in the United States who have gone through accredited training programs and have spent years developing their skills must complete a rigorous process of certification through the American Board of Plastic Surgery to become board certified and eligible to join the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This multi-step process includes written and oral tests, evaluation of results, evaluation of marketing tactics to ensure truthful and ethical information, and continued education in plastic surgery to maintain board certification. If your cosmetic surgeon does not display the American Society of Plastic Surgeons emblem, they are likely not a board-certified plastic surgeon. There are so-called “sham” boards that will “certify” doctors in aesthetic surgery or facial surgery, but never properly assess the surgeon’s qualifications or training. Look for the ASPS emblem to know you’re being treated by the best-trained and most capable cosmetic surgeons in the country.

Nicotine

By now, we are all well-versed in the long-term ill effects of smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, vaping, and nicotine use in general. Multiple cancers, emphysema, heart disease, blood vessel disease, and strokes are well-known side effects of tobacco use. But nicotine also causes more immediate health problems because it tightens blood vessels and reduces blood flow to tissues. When tissue has been injured either through trauma or surgery, nicotine actively inhibits the healing process. Because your safety is our utmost concern, we will not offer elective surgical procedures for active nicotine users because the healing risk is too high. If you are interested in cosmetic surgery but are currently using nicotine products, reach out to us and we can refer you to programs to help you quit and stay nicotine-free. It will be the best thing you ever do for your health.

Patient Safety

Elective surgery for cosmetic concerns is generally safe and effective when performed by qualified medical professionals on properly selected patients. Prior to any surgery planning, we will take an extensive medical history and consider your baseline health, medications, surgical history, social habits, risks for undergoing anesthesia, and your ability to properly follow aftercare instructions and restrictions. Your safety is always our first concern. If there is a condition that will substantially increase your risk for surgery, we may decline to perform surgery or work with you to improve or eliminate the conditions that could complicate your postoperative course. While there is always some risk of surgical complications, we strive to make your surgery and recovery as safe and stress-free as possible.
