Tummy Tuck
The abdominal region is a common target area for individuals considering body contouring treatments. Oftentimes, patients struggle with stubborn fat and excess skin that has collected in the abdomen and has not responded to traditional diet and exercise regimens. Additionally, weakening or stretching of the abdominal wall muscle layer that can occur with pregnancy, weight gain, and/or aging contributes to a less ideal contour. Tummy tuck surgery is a popular cosmetic surgery option to address those concerns and produce firmer skin, tighter and flatter abdominal wall muscles, and improved abdominal contour.
At Brighter Day Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery, board-certified plastic surgeon Kevin Day, MD recognizes how aesthetic concerns in the abdominal area can negatively affect a patient’s confidence. He is extensively trained and experienced with tummy tuck procedures and has helped many patients achieve their goals with customized treatment plans designed to create exceptional, natural-looking results.

What Is Tummy Tuck Surgery?
A tummy tuck, also referred to as abdominoplasty, is designed to recontour the midsection for a smoother, firmer, and more youthful look. The procedure involves removing excess skin and fatty tissue from the abdominal wall while pulling the remaining skin taut for a flatter appearance. Abdominoplasty also typically includes tightening and repairing the abdominal muscles. Men and women alike pursue this procedure to correct signs of loose, excess skin that even a healthy and active lifestyle cannot improve. Tummy tuck surgery can address many of the aesthetic effects on the abdomen that are produced by pregnancy and childbirth, as well as the after-effects of significant weight loss. With that in mind, genetics, environmental factors, and even the natural aging process can cause excess, inelastic skin and muscle laxity in the abdomen that may not be correctable through diet and exercise alone.
What Are the Benefits of Tummy Tuck Surgery?
Tummy tuck surgery offers several benefits, particularly for those struggling with loose, excess skin and/or stubborn fat in the abdominal area. It can help enhance your body’s contours, creating a smoother and firmer appearance in the abdominal region. This procedure helps remove sagging skin and tightens abdominal muscles, which may be weakened due to pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or aging. A tummy tuck can also improve your posture and help reduce discomfort caused by excess skin. Additionally, abdominoplasty can provide a boost in self-confidence, allowing you to feel more comfortable about your overall appearance. While it is not a weight-loss solution, tummy tuck surgery can offer lasting, transformative results for those seeking a more toned and youthful abdominal area.
Who Is a Candidate for Tummy Tuck Surgery?
Ideal candidates for abdominoplasty are usually:
- Individuals with excess abdominal skin or stubborn fat, often after weight loss or pregnancy.
- Those with weakened or separated abdominal muscles.
- People in good overall health, with no serious medical conditions.
- Non-smokers, or those willing to quit smoking before the procedure and during the recovery period.
- Individuals at or near their ideal weight who are looking for a firmer, “flatter” abdominal appearance.
- Those with realistic expectations and an understanding of the procedure’s limitations.
- Men and women prepared for a commitment to post-surgery care and a healthy lifestyle for optimal results.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Day can evaluate your concerns and help you determine whether you are an ideal candidate for tummy tuck surgery.
What Does the Tummy Tuck Procedure Involve?
Abdominoplasty is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, so patients can typically go home the same day. It is also important to note that general anesthesia will be required for this treatment. To begin the tummy tuck procedure, Dr. Day will carefully place an incision above the pubic region, going from one hip to the other. The residual scar from this incision can often be easily concealed under clothing and bathing suits, and the scar should also fade to some extent over time. In many cases, an additional incision may be necessary in the navel area in order to reposition the belly button. Stretched abdominal muscles will then be repaired and tightened, and excess skin will be removed. The remaining skin is then pulled taut and often slightly trimmed before the incision is closed.
Additionally, C-section scars and stretch marks can typically be removed during a tummy tuck as long as they are in the lower abdominal area where skin excision is being performed. Liposuction may also be recommended as part of the tummy tuck procedure if it is ultimately necessary for the achievement of individual treatment goals.
What Can I Expect in My Tummy Tuck Recovery?
Recovery from abdominoplasty can vary from patient to patient as each individual’s healing process is unique to them. Many patients experience swelling and tightness in the treatment area, though these side effects often subside in the days following the procedure. Any discomfort felt during recovery can typically be well-managed with pain medication. After a couple of weeks of resting, most patients can return to their normal daily routines; however, strenuous activities and workouts should be avoided for roughly six weeks. Dr. Day will provide detailed post-operative instructions to encourage a safe and effective healing process.
How Long Do Tummy Tuck Results Last?
When performed by a qualified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Day, abdominoplasty results can be very long-lasting, provided patients maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. The removal of excess skin and tightening of abdominal muscles is permanent, but significant weight gain or pregnancy can still affect the results. To preserve a more toned-looking abdomen, you should follow a balanced diet and regular exercise routine. While the effects of aging and gravity will still cause some changes over time, most patients enjoy their improved contours for many years. Proper post-surgery care, including avoiding smoking, often helps maximize the longevity of the results.
What Will My Tummy Tuck Scars Look Like?
Tummy tuck scars are typically located along the lower abdomen, just above the pubic area, where they can be easily concealed by clothing and even swimwear. The length and visibility of scars will depend on the extent of the surgery. A traditional tummy tuck may leave a longer scar, while a mini tummy tuck generally results in a shorter one. Scars initially appear red or pink but can gradually fade over time. Proper aftercare of moisturizing, applying sun protection, and following post-op instructions can help minimize scarring. Over time, scars usually become less noticeable, blending with your natural skin tone.
How Much Does a Tummy Tuck Cost?
The total cost of abdominoplasty often differs from patient to patient since these treatments are customized to each individual’s unique needs. Pricing may range from $9,200 to $12,500. Some of the factors that can contribute to the overall cost include:
- Anesthesia and facility fees
- Whether liposuction or other procedures are performed in conjunction with tummy tuck surgery
- Whether the treatment is included in a Mommy Makeover or other type of combination procedure
- Prescribed pain medication, surgical garments, or other post-operative care items
